The Bible says that Jesus is the foundation of our faith. The Apostle Paul wrote, “For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ (I Corinthians 3:11 NASB).” Without Jesus, there is no Christianity. He alone is the foundation of our great faith. There are other foundations from which people build their lives: Muhammad, Mary Baker Eddy, Joseph Smith, Charles Taze Russell, Charles Darwin, Karl Marx, and a host of others, but these foundations will not last. These so-called prophets and leaders are dead. Their bodies molder in the dank earth. But Jesus alone overcame death. He lives. And because He lives, He is the firm foundation that will never crumble or fall to ruin.
How do we build upon Christ, our firm foundation? We build upon Him by following His leadings and living according to His will for our lives. Far too many people who claim an allegiance to Christ never bother asking Him for instructions in how they are to live out their life. God has a plan for each of us. I will refer you to Jeremiah 29:11. He has a plan for your life. He has a plan for my life. He may ask you to do one thing and He may have me doing something else. That’s good. We are not cookie cutter Christians. He has plans just for you. He has plans just for me. Again, this is good, for He knows you and me by name and He knows just what it will take for you and me to be fulfilled, content, and productive.
My friend, when we follow His dream for our lives, we will be content. We will be fulfilled. We will be productive. And we will not look back upon our lives with misgiving and regret. Do not miss this point: Rather than living life our way, we are to live life His way.
I speak from firsthand experience. For years, I had a dream. Actually, I had more than one dream. Nothing worked out. It grieves me to admit that I have frittered much of my life away in trivial pursuit. But when, at the age of thirty-five, I came to Christ Jesus as my Savior, I cried out, “I am tired of living life my way—let’s live life Your way for a change!” Okay, that is not a very eloquent prayer, but God honored that prayer.
Today, I am more content than ever before. And I do not worry about wasting away my life over mere trivialities because, at long last, I am serving Jesus according to His will.
God has plans for you. Big plans. Plans to give you hope and a future. What are those plans? I don’t know. Ask Him. He will tell you.
There is more to life than making money, buying a house, driving a new car, and socking away a few bucks for the future. Do not misunderstand me—we need to work. We need to earn our keep. We need a place to live. And, at least in this country, it is hard to survive without transportation, but life is so much more than material wealth. I have met too many people whose lives are centered on their showcase possessions. Wealth and social status make poor foundations, too.
God wants us to set aside our dreams and focus on the dreams He has for us. For those who refuse to settle for second best, the only way to live is to build a life based upon God’s blueprints. This means that Jesus is our foundation and the walls, floor, and roof of our life are built according to His masterplan.
Do not waste your life. Do not waste even one more day. Live for Him.
