Admittedly, I am probably the age of your grandfather, so I am not familiar with the movie you mention. Come to think of it, you probably have a long list of movies, celebrities, and interests that would be totally foreign to me. I have a younger daughter who, at twenty-two, reminds me constantly of this generational chasm that makes me out of touch with today’s popular culture. Forty long years separate my daughter and me and some of these differences are rather befuddling to this aging dinosaur.
Although Christianity has a set of hard and fast rules that we are to follow, our faith is much more than an exhaustive category of moral codes. In other words, we are to focus on Jesus Christ rather than a list of do’s and don’ts. Does this make sense to you?
So you asked if making a secret language based on a popular movie is a sin. As for me, I have enough trouble with English, but maybe you are fine with developing your own secret language. And you went on to ask about translating the Bible into this secret language.
For two thousand years, people have been asking “Is it a sin for me to ____________________ as a Christian?” I can make this pretty easy for you.
If what you propose is not clearly condemned in Scripture (and I am unaware of any passage that says you cannot develop a secret language based upon a motion picture) and if what you propose will help draw you and others closer to God, then it is probably okay.
Legalism is an unhealthy and unreasonable preoccupation with rules. Admittedly, there are some rules we must follow. We are not to murder. We are not to steal. We are not to lie. We are not to engage in sexual sin. Got that? But people are forever asking questions like, “Is it okay to burn incense when I pray?” or “Can a Christian have tattoos?” God is not concerned about incense and He does not become unglued if you sport a tattoo. The question is really quite simple: Will wearing a nose ring or dying my hair purple or whatever bring me closer or send me further from God?”
Our faith is more than a moral code. Of course, our faith is not less than a moral code, either, but the real focus must always be on our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. You can have purple hair and a nose ring and enjoy intimacy with Him.
