I am grateful for your question. Now let me share a little secret with you. God did not call me as a censor. He never told me to tell people what to watch on TV or YouTube. He told me to share His word. He sent me to teach. He called me to minister to others. But He did not make me a censor. I am glad, for I really do not want to be judge and jury over others’ choices in entertainment. Does this make sense to you?
I lived nine years without a television. And I did not miss it. Even now, I seldom watch anything other than weather updates. The reason is simple: I keep busy. I am living life. I am no longer a mere spectator. I climbed out of the bleachers and made my way into the arena. And living life is much more gratifying than watching the TV and videos.
My young friend, I am an old guy. But I am a busy old guy. I work at a homeless shelter. I teach in a prison. I edit studies for a Bible college. And, on the side, I am recording an album of original music. Why am I telling you this? Today, I tend to make every moment count. But much of my life, I am sorry to say, was spent in trivial pursuit. In other words, most of my years can only be classified as wasted years. Nothing accomplished. Nothing proven. Just wasted years. An idle passing of time. This is my confession.
And now, I am an old guy desperately trying to make up for all of those years that I frittered away.
Let me speak frankly; most of my life is behind me. The grave cannot be far off. And I cannot get those wasted, idle, fruitless years back. I am often grieved by all of the precious time I allowed to slip through my fingers..
To be sure, my life counts for something now. The Lord has put me to work. And, by His grace, I am helping people. And I do this in the Name of Jesus Christ. What I do, I do for Him. And it feels good. It feels right. At long last, this one and only life God gave me is counting for something.
If I were your age, I would…
But I am not your age.
Friend, you can fritter your life away watching videos and playing games or you can make your life count for something big! Really big! Something awesome! Something memorable. Something amazing! And something enormously satisfying!
Most people live and die and do almost nothing. They accomplish almost nothing. And their impact on this world is almost nothing.
You can watch YouTube or you can accomplish great feats for the honor and glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Please do not waste your life. For your sake. For God’s sake. As for me, I will never get back those wasted years. About the best I can do is to make the most of the little time I have remaining.
Do not misinterpret my message to you. We are not saved by our works. We cannot earn salvation. On the contrary, Christians are those who are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ (Eph. 2: 8, 9) and our works will not get us one inch closer to Heaven. But our works are important, for our works reflect the depth and sincerity of our faith. Those who have no works probably have no faith.
Make something of this one and only life God has given you. And when you are old like me, you will not have the regrets that come with a wasted life.
My young friend, I have told you the truth. May the Lord bless you and keep you.
